Toxics watchdog group BAN Toxics calls the attention of the Commission on Election to issue a resolution prohibiting the use of plastic and PVC tarpaulin campaign materials in the upcoming Barangay, Sangguniang Kabataan Election 2023.

“We hope that the COMELEC will take lead in promoting environmental protection in the country by prohibiting the use of non-environmentally acceptable election campaign materials to make this election toxic-free and waste-free.” said Rey San Juan, executive director of BAN toxics.

According to the Commission on Election, the COMELEC issued Resolution No. 10294 s. 2018, “candidates are hereby encouraged to use recyclable and environment-friendly materials and avoid those that contain hazardous chemicals and substances in the production of their campaign and election propaganda.”

“Candidates are required to indicate in their campaign materials the phrase: “This material should be recycled.” In local government units where local legislation governing the use of plastic and other similar materials exist, candidates shall comply with the same.

In Quezon City, the city council passed an ordinance in 2013 prohibiting the use of polyethylene plastic advertisement and propaganda materials within its territorial jurisdiction.

“The usage of plastics posters as campaign materials during election time and their typical disposal creates significant litter problems in the city and sometimes clogs up canals and sewerage systems that cause floods.”

BAN Toxics is an environmental organization that works for the advancement of environmental justice, health, and sustainable development in the area of chemicals and wastes, with a special focus on women, children, and other marginalized sectors. #
