The environmental group BAN Toxics is calling on the public to maintain cleanliness and sanctity of burial grounds during the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Soul’s Day, a tradition of visiting the tombs of our loved ones.
As reported in 2022, a total of 78 truckloads of trash were collected from both the Manila North Cemetery and the Manila South Cemetery during the Undas season. This surge was primarily attributed to the additional waste generated in the aftermath of Typhoon Paeng, including fallen trees and leaves.
“Let’s not turn burial grounds into dumping grounds. We must preserve cemeteries as clean, peaceful and waste-free places,” said Thony Dizon, Toxics Campaigner of BAN Toxics.
The group commends the caretakers of both public and private cemeteries for their efforts in maintaining the tidiness of these burial sites, creating a memorable and respectful resting place for visitors.
BAN Toxics offers the following simple tips to reduce toxic waste in cemeteries:
1. Use only lead-safe paints when painting gravestones.
2. Opt for cotton wick candles instead of those with lead-cored wicks and light them one at a time to minimize humidity.
3. Avoid bringing excessive food to prevent the accumulation of spoiled leftover food.
4. Use reusable containers for food and water to prevent using plastic disposables.
5. Do not leave any trash behind; take them home for proper segregation and disposal.
6. Follow the rules and regulations established by cemetery caretakers.
7. Always demonstrate proper etiquette and respect when visiting grave sites.
“Cemeteries are considered the final resting places of our departed loved ones and should be treated with the utmost respect and reverence,” the group added.
