On April 26, the Autism Recovery Network of the Philippines (ARNP), in partnership with BAN Toxics, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Daet, Camarines Norte, and Daet Elementary School, conducted a series of face-to-face seminars on toxic chemical exposure and prevention.
With the theme ‘Amidst Challenges There is Hope for Children with Autism thru Continued Support of the LGUs, Communities and Each of Us,’ the seminar was attended by members and officers of ARNP, LGU representatives, parents, teachers, students of Daet Elementary School, and child development workers and Barangay Nutrition Scholars in 25 Barangays of Daet town.
BAN Toxics acted as the main resource speaker for the seminar and discussed the various toxic chemicals and their health effects on children. The group also shared their experiences in conducting advocacy activities to promote awareness of various chemicals lurking in consumer products and advocated for the protection of public health and the environment.
Marilou Lagdameo, the ARNP president, said in a message during the seminar that ARNP is continuously conducting awareness activities to protect children.
“Studies have shown that toxic chemicals could be one of the causes of children’s behavioral issues like autism,” Lagdameo said.
She also shared that when she had her son tested, they found out that he had traces of mercury, lead, thallium, and radium on his hair, possibly acquired from toys that he put in his mouth.
The seminar was part of ‘Fun Walk’, ARNP’s main activity that was held last April 28 in celebration of World Autism Month. Fun Walk was participated in by schools, community groups, and civic institutions to celebrate World Autism Month.
