On January 30, 2025, the Project Steering Committee (PSC) of the Philippine Healthcare and Mercury Wastes Management Project (HCW Project) held its inaugural meeting to finalize the project’s five-year work plan. The meeting was led by Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Undersecretary for Policy and Internal Affairs Atty. Jonas Leones, with the support of DENR Assistant Secretary and concurrent Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Director Jacqueline Caancan, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Project Manager Dr. Carmela Centeno, and BAN Toxics Deputy Executive Director and Project Manager Jam Lorenzo. It provided a comprehensive overview of the project’s objectives, key milestones, and expected outcomes.
PSC members include representatives from the DENR-EMB, DENR-Foreign-Assisted and Special Projects Service (FASPS), Department of Health (DOH), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and the Development Bank of the Philippines.
The HCW Project aims to improve healthcare waste management in the country, with a special focus on reducing the release and emissions of hazardous substances from healthcare waste. Implemented by UNIDO and the DENR-EMB, the project receives funding support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), with BAN Toxics serving as the executing partner.
