Introducing Nurse Susie, a character designed to promote environmental sustainability in healthcare. As part of the HCWM Project’s Toxics-Free Hospitals Campaign, Nurse Susie inspires healthcare workers and institutions to say no to single-use plastics, embrace reusable alternatives, and raise awareness about toxic chemicals found in healthcare waste.

Nurse Susie encourages everyone to embrace zero-waste practices through the campaign’s 4Cs Framework:

  • Changing old habits through proper waste segregation and mindful consumption;
  • Cutting plastics by reducing reliance on single-use plastics;
  • Committing to reuse through alternatives like reusable masks and personal protective equipment; and
  • Championing sustainability by advocating for environmentally-sound practices and technologies within healthcare facilities and communities.

Reducing plastic use, especially single-use plastics, is a crucial intervention in minimizing potential sources of toxic chemical emissions from healthcare waste.

Through the HCWM Project, key interventions focus on improving healthcare waste segregation, reducing reliance on single-use plastics, promoting reusable face masks and other personal protective equipment, adopting low- or zero-emission waste treatment technologies, and strengthening capacity for the environmentally sound management of infectious and other healthcare wastes.

Follow Nurse Susie’s and join the movement toward cleaner, safer, and more sustainable healthcare waste management!
